This
past week was one of the most enjoyable weeks I've had
since I moved out to Los Angeles. I spent Monday thru Thursday nights helping
out as a Production Assistant on the feature film Home of the Giants, starring
Haley Joel Osment and Ryan Merriman. This was my first time on location/set of
a feature film; and although it's not a studio
film, it was an interesting, fun, and exciting experience nonetheless.
The
director/writer, Rusty Gordman, is a first time feature film director. Hes
done mostly commerical and 2nd unit work in the past. After watching and working
along side him this past week, I can almost guarantee this movie will do well
at Sundance and hell go on to make many more feature films.
I
worked (mostly watched) a total of 47 hours in four days, working from 2pm - 5pm
to 3am - 6am each night. Overall, it was a great experience. There is a lot of
down time on movie sets as it takes awhile to setup lighting, sound, actors and
the camera for each shot. In a 12-hour day the production only shoots between
2 to 5 minutes of actual usuable screen footage.
Last
night was one of the longest, slowest, yet most interesting nights that I worked.
We shot on location in the town of La Puente, CA. The movie takes place in a rural
town in North Carolina and the old downtown of La Puente (if you cant see
the mountains) looks identical to any generic small town in the midwest. It made
me a little homesick. We spent the night shooting chase scenes and drive-bys (not
the violent ones) through the city streets, and we did all this without any permits
or stunt guys.
It
was a blast!
